Progesterone is a steroid hormone involved in the female menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and the embryonic development of humans and other species. Progesterone belongs to a class of hormones called progestogens. This steroid hormone is produced in the ovaries, the adrenal glands, and in the placenta during pregnancy. Progesterone, like all steroids, is a small hydrophobic molecule that diffuses freely through the plasma membrane of target cells. Progesterone, in combination with a high estrogen level, suppresses further ovulation during pregnancy and also encourages the growth of milk-producing glands in the breast during pregnancy. Progesterone is stored in adipose tissue and also plays a role in sexual desire. It is derived from cholesterol, and is the precursor of the male sex hormones aldosterone, androstenedione, and cortisol.
